Call for Papers

The Text and Its (Re)Production. An Interdisciplinary Dialogue on Cultural Techniques in Editorial Studies (Wuppertal, 29.9–1.10.2021)

Textuality, textual production, and the editorial reproducibility of text take centre stage at the 2021 conference organised and hosted by the Graduiertenkolleg “Dokument – Text – Edition” (research training group at University of Wuppertal/Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal/Bethel, hereafter simply Kolleg). After its 2018 conference dedicated to the “document”, the Kolleg now focuses on “text” as a concept and its context of various cultural techniques. As the title of the Kolleg forebodes, “text” will be approached as both as a methodical turning point as well as the interrelation of the material document and its editorial representation. The term itself and its operationalisation in specific edition projects will be examined in two conference panels.

The panel DRAWING THE BOUNDARIES OF TEXT (Textgrenzen abstecken) aims, by discussing various forms of texts and their relation to one another, at a reflection of the text as a theoretical term and model. What are the implications of the – e.g. cultural, disciplinary, or project specific - term text? What are its consequences with regard to the editorial practice? Thoroughly grasping the specific theoretical concept and methodological approach is crucial for the understanding of an edition, and the processes through which it comes into being. Indeed, what are the potentials of a specific perspective on the matter? And what are its limitations?

For this panel we are looking for multidisciplinary contributions that expand on the medium in which text is transmitted (text as writing, image, sound, graph, etc.) as well as how text is executed and performed (written text, source code, score, etc.) and that reflect upon textual reprocessings in editions, and therefore stimulate terminological and methodological debate.

The panel INTERPRETING TEXT(RE)PRODUCTION (Text(re-)produktion deuten) sheds light on the production and reproduction of texts in their historical, socio-cultural, economic and technological context. Its questions revolve around the possibilities of editorial analysis and representation of ‘text layers’ (genetic criticism, transmission and reception), but equally how the meaning of texts is shaped by the prerequisites and circumstances or processes of production and reproduction. Answering these questions will eventually allow to define a sensible scope of scholarly editing.

For this panel we are looking for contributions that shed light on the production of texts and to which extent the production process should be taken into consideration for the interpretation of the text.

The conference will take place from 29 September to 1 October 2021 online, hosted by the University of Wuppertal. Each panel will open by a keynote of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Anke Bosse (University of Klagenfurt) and Dr. Anna Dorofeeva (Durham University), respectively. The keynotes are followed by papers of 15 minutes length focussing in particular on the interdisciplinary discussion of the subject. Responses of GRK fellows set the scene for further discussion. An overarching discussion with all attendants will conclude the conference. We warmly invite scholars from all disciplines who use editions or who work on an edition to submit a paper proposal (max. 500 words) accompanied with a short biography and contact information (e-mail, telephone, postal address) to texttagung@uni-wuppertal.de until 14 March 2021. Please indicate clearly in which panel you would like to deliver your paper. You will receive an email with further information shortly thereafter. The structure of the conference demands that all participants have access to a written version of the papers in advance. Please provide us with your paper no later than 1 August 2021. The conference language is German, but contributions in English are accepted as well. Travel and hotel costs are covered for those invited. A post-conference publication is planned.
